This year, Skyline Adventures is offering a 6-day trek through the popular Santa Cruz & Ulta valleys as a fundraising event for a new alternative school in Huaraz, Peru. We ourselves, being not only mountain enthusiasts but also parents, have joined forces with Semillas de Vida (Seeds of Life) to support their community effort to educate children in a way that fosters respect for themselves and others, a connection to the environment, an insatiable curiosity, and self-directed discovery of the world around them. Skyline will donate 100% of the proceeds from this trip to the Semillas project, helping fund the construction of the schoolhouse, necessary materials and texts, and scholarships for local students who otherwise would be unable to attend the school.
Semillas de Vida is located on a 2500 meter-squared plot of land just outside of Huaraz with a functioning communal organic garden, a forest, a river, and unlimited opportunity for children to learn and play. The school intends to begin it's first year of elementary level classes in March of 2012 with 10 students from both Peru and other countries, it will be multi-lingual (Spanish, English, and French) and will emphasize music, agriculture, and outdoor activities as a means of delivering it's curriculum and mission. Check out Semillas de Vida's facebook page for more information on the project. |
