14 Day Pisco / Chopicalqui Itinerary

Private transfer in the morning to the bus station. Take a comfortable first class ride to Huaraz (approximately 8 hour journey). Move into your hotel and relax... the adventure is all around you!

Meet at the Skyline office to review your itinerary, answer questions, finalize trip. Spend the rest of the day visiting nearby ruins and touring the city (acclimitize!). Spend the night in your Huaraz hotel.

Day hike to the turquoise waters of Laguna Churup (4500 meters). Approximately 6 hours round trip. Return to Huaraz.

5 |
Ice climbing at a nearby glacier to test out your equipment & review some basic climbing techniques and glacier travel skills. Acclimatize during the fun, Pastoruri is 5000 meters.

Pack your bags! We head out past the beautiful Llanganuco lakes and on to the trailhead where we load our donkeys and ascend to the Pisco Base Camp.

Continue up to the High Camp located at the foot of the glacier. Prepare for the following days summit climb.

Summit day! Wake at 2:00am and after a light breakfast depart for the summit. Arrive at the summit about 10am and discover why everyone talks about the view! Return to camp and continue on back down to the Base Camp.

Hike out and set up camp near the trail head. Rest, Relax, and enjoy a delicious Asado (BBQ!)

Take a short bus transport to the Chopicalqui trail head and begin the assent up to the Moraine camp (4900m).

Press on up to the High Camp located on the glacier(5300 meters). Prepare for the following days summit.

Summit Day!! Wake up at 1:00am and depart for the summit at 3:00am. Work your way up the massive southern ridge and on to the summit at last! Return to Morraine camp for the night.

Pack up camp and descend down to the winding road which leads back to Huaraz. Stop for lunch and the Llanganuco Lakes. Check back into your hotel for a well deserved shower and then a Celebration Banquet!

Urus Summit Day! Your first alpine start has you leaving camp by 4:00am. Work your way up the steep moraine to the toe of the glacier where you'll put on crampons, harnesses, and rope up. Weave your way to the summit, usually arriving around 11am. Celebrate! Return down to base camp for a well-earned dinner and sleep!

Move up to the high camp of Ishinca, 4800m, set camp and get ready for the next days climb.

Ishinca Summit Day! Another Alpine start - 3:00am waking and leaving by4:00am. Ishinca's summit push is about 2 hours longer then Urus'. You'll pick your way through the delicate Andean tundra and gain the glacier around sunrise. Once on the glacier, wind your way through some impressive crevasses and up to the high saddle, then follow a summit ridge to the very top. Estimated summit time is 1:00pm and return to Base Camp by 6:00 p.m.

Rest day (day hike options). Work on some skills for your Tocllaraju climb at base camp in the afternoon.

Taking your essentials, you'll leave for the high glacier camp of your final mountain, Toclliaraju. It usually takes 6 hours to reach the camp at 5000 meters. Enjoy an unforgettable dinner while mezmerized by Toclliaraju’s impressive west face. Get to sleep early for the next days climb.

An early start today... wake at 12:00 midnight and after a light breakfast depart for the summit by around 2:00am. You'll work your way across the saddle and begin the classic assent up Toclla's north ridge. Things get steeper as you climb, with two sections of 60-80 degree snow and/or ice. Return to high camp typically around 2:00pm and after a rest and some warm food, continue back down to base camp for dinner and sleep.

Sleep in at last and wake to a delicious breakfast before packing up camp and loading the donkeys for the return to Huaraz. Once there, you'll check into your hotel for quite possibly the best shower of your life. Dinner that night is a celebration banquet, a traditional Pachamanca, held in an even more traditional Peruvian hut.

Artisonraju is a technical summit requiring previous experience with climbing systems and vertical ascents & descents. All participants will be screened before approval onto the trip. Continue hiking up the valley 5-7 hours towards the first pass of the trek (Punta Union 4750 meters). Camp before the pass near the popular Alpamayo base camp. Optional trip up to see the base camp.

Hike up and over Punta Union and descend to about 4200 meters where a nice camp awaits. Hiking time, 6-7 hours.

Continue your descent towards the town of Vaqueria, then cut southeast on the trail at Colcabamba. Enter the Ulta valley and sleep before ascending to the second pass. Hiking time, 5-6 hours.

Hike up and over the pass then descend to a beautiful campsite on the other side. Hiking time 5-6 hours.

Laguna Carhuacocha to Huayhuash. Most people take the off trail route passing three differently colored lakes and winding below the peaks of Yurupaja and Siula. There is an option to follow the donkeys up a more gradual and less scenic pass and re-convene in the camp of Huayhuash. Duration: 5-8 hours. Altitude at Camp: 4330 meters.

Viconga to Guanacpatay. You’ll hike over the highest pass in the Huayhuash circuit, reaching 5000 meters of altitude. Six hour hiking day, taking you to your highest camp on the route at 4500 meters. Pass some beautiful galcier fed lakes, over the Osoruri pass (4850 meters), and then drop down to the camping site on the other side.

A longer days walk then the previous will take you from your Osoruri camp to a place called Jancarurish, where you'll catch your first breathtaking glimpse of the north face of Alpamayo. You'll leave the Cedros valley this day, have a layover at your camp the following day to really soak in the views, then get back on your way on day 9.

Well deserved rest day with optional hikes & exploration, with the lake of Jancarurish a short walk away for great views and sweet serenity.

2 high passes to navigate will take you out of the Alpamayo valley and into Huillca valley, a notable area of agricultural activity. We'll set up camp near the grazing alpaca herds and the homes of the indiginous farmers who care for them.

One more pass at 4600 meters will expose the lush Jancapampa valley, covered in the native quenoal tree which grows as high as the highest vegetation found in the Himalaya range. Lunch at a lake called Sactaycocha often lends views of the resident ducks and geese, and then camp in the fertile valley still awards a vista of the glaciers and waterfalls flowing from Pucajirca.

The walk out to Pomabamba starts today and your trek will soon be only a fabulous memory! Pass through a few villages then meet your transport in Pomabamba for the ride back to Huaraz. Cross the Andes once again, this time the easy way, and shower up and shave for a celebration banquet that evening!

Your donkeys will meet you at the lodge this morning to pack up your equipment and help you get on your way. The trek begins hiking back towards Churup and vears into the granite walled valley of Quilquihuanca. Stop and camp about 1/2 way up the valley next to a spectacular alpine lake.

Continue to make your way up the valley until reaching it's end. Camp here and begin your goodbyes to the donkeys - tomorrow the backpacks go on and the animals go home!

The most physically demanding day of the trek takes you up and over the pass dividing Quilquihuanca with Cojup. You'll pick your route through the morraine of the mountain Huapi, following cairns and spotting Vizcachas along the way. Drop down the other side to another incredible camp in the Cojup.

Begin your hike down the Cojup, stopping frequently to take photos! you'll hike about 1/2 way out the valley before setting up camp again.

Continue your hike out of the Cojup, downhill all the while, unitl at last you see the roofline of the lodge where you began your adventure. Hike until you make the full circle, stop and have a cup of tea, then load up the taxi and head on back to Huaraz for a nice warm shower and a celebration banquet dinner.

Continue on down following the ancient yet still in-tact Inca trail system. In the early afternoon you'll arrive at the Chavin ruins where you can pass a few hours exploring the temples and ancient courtyards. That night, camp near the banks of the Huari River.

Get picked up and drive the scenic route back over the Cordillera stopping for lunch at the Olympic pass where you will be treated to stunning views of Huascaran mountain, Peru’s highest peak. That night you'll be back in the hotel in Huaraz for nice hot showers and a dinner feast to follow!
